hew (hyo͞o) v. to make or shape by cutting or chopping a material such as wood or stone
— New Oxford American Dictionary

HEWMAN is a collaborative collective of artists who aim to widen the potential for equality and empathy between dance audiences and performers.

Each of HEWMAN's installations

  • is an interaction between dance and at least one other medium;

  • is created through a collaborative and open-ended creative process;

  • is presented in a new space where dance is not the normal fare;

  • integrates a new audience population that is not part of New York City's regular dance community;

  • makes the viewers as crucial to the environment as the performers;

  • and emphasizes the similarity between the performers and the viewers, not the difference.
