The Embrey Family Foundation commissioned HEWMAN to shoot a dance film series in Dallas, TX on October 2 - 6, 2014. The series serves as the social media component of the Foundation's campaign to spread awareness and spark conversation for Facing Race, a national program that held its annual conference in Dallas on November 13 - 15, 2014.
After accepting our grant application, the Foundation tasked us with developing a concept that explores this year's conference theme, implicit bias, through the lens of our unspoken art form. We quickly connected with the universality and inevitability of the million daily decisions our brains make without conscious consent. Our response was to alternate scenes of pedestrians with scenes of dancers embodying the unconscious activity going on inside of them.
From 12:30 pm to 12:30 am one fall Saturday, we romped around the graffiti-lathered courtyard of Herschel Weisfeld's Corinth Park - under the same kind of cameras that shot Lord of the Rings - with a tireless team of collaborators all bent on breaking down bias.
